Kristin Vickers Douglas, Ph.D., ABPP – Clinical Health Psychologist at the Mayo Clinic

Getting inside the mind of the aging woman is something that Kristin Vickers Douglas, Ph.D., ABPP of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota does on a daily basis. For the “Embrace of Aging: the female perspective of growing old,” Dr. Vickers-Douglas took some time to discuss with us the psychological process of women - especially as they navigate through the natural aging process of life

There are many factors that women experience that are unique compared to their male counterparts. Anxiety of family well-being, work, and appearance can be very difficult to manage. Dr. Vickers-Douglas described how it is not uncommon for women to be so immersed in the role of “caregiver” that it can have a negative impact on their own health.

Throughout the conversation we discussed the difficulties of menopause and how open communication between a woman and her partner are crucial. We touched on how women in Hollywood have approached aging and understanding that, “it’s okay that I’m aging; I’m still beautiful and relevant to society.”

It is easy to understand why Dr. Vickers Douglas is as respected as she is. The 41 year-old mother of two works very hard to help women through the aging process by being approachable and respectful. Her insight into the woman’s mind is a very welcome addition to the series. We had a wonderful time visiting with Dr. Vickers Douglas and the Mayo Clinic.

Dr. Vickers Douglas’ participation in “The Embrace of Aging: the female perspective of growing old” will be a crucial addition to the series.
