Dr. Kamala Tamirisa Cardiologist

“It is easy for women to ignore the signs. They have so much going on that most women don’t take time for themselves.” Dr. Kamala Tamirisa, a cardiologist with the Northwest Ohio Cardiology Consultants (NWOCC), shared this thought about women and how they ignore the signs of potential heart trouble. The series about the aging woman is going to shed light on old myths about many health issues; maybe the most important will be women’s heart health.

Dr. Tamirisa came to the United States to follow her passion for medicine and heart care. She said that she knew that she was going to be a cardiac surgeon when she was younger, but when she began working with the circuitry of the heart she found that was her calling. Having studied in India at The Institute of Medical Sciences she completed her internship and residency at The St. Louis University. She then came to the University of Michigan to complete her General Cardiology fellowship and then a 2-year Cardiac Electrophysiology fellowship as well.

Currently she works for ProMedica Northwest Ohio Cardiology Consultants in Toledo, Ohio. She spent some time discussing women’s health issues and the importance of listening to the signs that your body gives you. Heart attacks are now the number 1 killer among women according to recent studies. Dr. Tamirisa explained that this is because heart complications up until the past 20 years were widely ignored for women. Now that just is not the case.

“We need to educate women about the signs of potential heart issues and to act. Don’t wait until the big event,” she said.

In addition to speaking about women’s health care we also spoke with the doctor about the importance of finding purpose in life, how to relieve stress, why having a close group of friends is important and more. This happily married mother of two was a pleasure to talk with, even if she said, “If the man in your life causes you stress, get rid of him.”

As The Embrace of Aging: The female perspective of growing old continues we will continue to learn more about women’s health.
