Walk to End Alzheimer’s
Detroit, MI Ford Field
With – Mickey, Audrey and Sara Bloomberg
Alzheimer’s disease and dementia are considered to be an “old person” disease with more than 5 million American’s age 65 and up suffering from it. There are more than 200,000 people younger than that suffering from it as well. For the Bloomberg family, husband and father Erwin is suffering from a form of dementia and Alzheimer’s at the age of 60. Mickey, his wife, along with daughter’s Audrey and Sara participated in the Alzheimer’s Association’s “Walk to End Alzheimer’s” which was held in downtown Detroit at Ford Field. We are fortunate to have the Bloomberg’s allowing us to step into a very personal part of their lives for the Embrace of Aging documentary. As an aging woman it has to be extremely difficult adjusting your life for your loved one suffering from such a debilitating disease so early in life. Mickey who is the wife of Erwin is helping us understand what this is like for the film.
The goal of the walk is to raise money to be used in research to combat and cure the disease. This year there were 6,000 walkers who all came in support of a loved one or have some form of dementia or Alzheimer’s themselves. On this beautiful sunny morning you could not help but feel the optimism and love during the one mile walk around Ford Field and Comerica Park. For the Bloomberg’s and the rest of the walkers, you know that they would prefer to not have to walk anymore because a cure has been found. Until that day, they will be there every year like everyone else.
Alzheimer’s disease is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States with 1 in 3 seniors dying with either Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia. For this walk the Alzheimer’s Association set a goal of raising $700,000 from online donations and gifts given that day. We cannot thank Mickey and her family enough for allowing us to be a part of this day and for letting us into their lives for the Embrace of Aging: The Female Perspective of Growing Old. We look forward to catching up again with them soon.
